Music Readiness

What is Music Readiness?

The Music Readiness Program is designed for children and individuals who are interested in music but may not yet be ready for formal instrumental lessons. The program builds the foundational skills required to participate confidently in music learning, providing a supported and accessible entry point into music education

Who is it for?

  • Children who are curious about music but not yet ready for structured lessons
  • Students who need support with focus, confidence, or learning readiness
  • Neurodivergent learners who benefit from a flexible, strengths-based approach
  • Students transitioning toward instrumental lessons
  • Learners who may have found traditional lessons overwhelming or unsuccessful in the past

How Sessions are delivered:

All Music Readiness sessions are delivered by Registered Music Therapists (RMTs). RMTs have specialist training in:

  • Human development and learning
  • Communication and engagement
  • Sensory and emotional regulation
  • Neurodiversity-affirming practice

This ensures sessions are:

  • Person-centred and strengths-based
  • Responsive to sensory, emotional, and cognitive needs
  • Flexible and adaptive for diverse learners
  • Grounded in evidence-based practice

What Skills Are Developed?

Sessions focus on building core readiness skills, including:

  • Musical foundations (rhythm, pitch, beat, coordination)
  • Listening and musical response
  • Focus, attention, and turn-taking
  • Following and responding to musical cues
  • Emotional regulation during learning
  • Confidence and self-esteem
  • Instrument exploration and early music reading

How is it different to Music Therapy?

While sessions are supportive and responsive, Music Readiness is not music therapy.

  • Music Therapy focuses on therapeutic goals such as emotional regulation, behaviour, communication, or sensory processing
  • Music Readiness focuses on developing the skills needed to engage in music learning, while remaining flexible and supportive

Pathway into instrumental lessons

Music Readiness can act as a stepping stone into formal lessons, such as piano. When a student demonstrates readiness, confidence, and foundational skills, we can discuss appropriate next steps and lesson options.
