Key Word Sign Basic Workshops

What is Key Word Signs?

Key word sign is the use of hand signs to represent key words in a sentence. It uses a combination of manual signs, gestures and speech to support receptive and expressive communication. 

What do you learn in a workshop?

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to: 

- explain the difference between Key Word Sign, Auslan and Signed English 

- sign at least 80 signs 

- select vocabulary for individual clients 

- have an understanding of sign production techniques 

-Have an understanding of the different types of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) 

- know where to find resources and follow up support in the use of key word sign and natural gesture 

-have an opportunity to sing and sign


Upon completion of this training, an official certificate from Key Word Sign NSW will be issued.

Who can come to the Key Word Sign basic workshops?

Key Word Sign workshops are open to carers, parents, teachers, and all health professionals. No signing experience is necessary

How long are the workshops?

Our Key Word Sign workshops run for approximately 7 hours with a one hour break. If the workshop is online it split into 2 days each being 3.5 hours

When are the workshops run?

The Key Word Sign workshops are run a few times a year. They are run both online and in person depending on location availability. 

When is the next workshop run?

Key Word Sign Workshop dates:

- [Online] Sunday 11th & 18th September 2022 from 9am-12:30pm (both sessions must be attended
